Siemens Signs 15-Year Contract With Cape Wind

Global integrated technology company Siemens, which has operations in Worcester, will supply wind turbines for the planned offshore wind farm off the coast of Cape Cod, known as Cape Wind, according to both companies.

Siemens Energy Inc. signed a 15-year contract with Cape Wind to build, install and commission its 3.6-megawatt turbines, which have been used in similar projects in other countries. Gov. Deval Patrick said in a statement that the contract is a “significant milestone” for the wind farm, which is permitted for construction in Nantucket Sound, and may become the first offshore U.S. wind farm.

“Massachusetts will be a pioneer in the emerging offshore wind industry, which brings with it both clean energy and good jobs,” Patrick said.

Siemens, headquartered in Germany, said the Cape Wind project is the third energy contract it signed in a week. The price of the contract was not disclosed.

“We look forward to providing our world-class technology, global project experience and industry knowledge to this landmark project,” Siemens Energy President and CEO Randy Zwirn said.

According to Siemens, there is significant potential to power coastal areas of the U.S. with clean energy, with potential wind farm sites situated along the Southern and Northern Atlantic Coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Siemens cited a recent study by Navigant Research that predicts installed U.S. offshore wind power will rise 3.5 gigawatts in the next five years.

Meanwhile, the Cape Wind project is still in its financing phase, but it is the first U.S. offshore wind project to be fully permitted and approved by the Department of the Interior. Cape Wind recently announced it will purchase a marina on Falmouth Harbor to serve as its maintenance and operations headquarters.
