Higgins pieces to premiere at WAM in March

Less than three months after the Higgins Armory closed its doors for good, the Worcester Art Museum will host its first exhibit featuring the arms and armory collection from the Higgins.

“Knights!” will open March 29 and will explore the place of arms and armory “in the broader context of history, storytelling and art,” WAM said in a statement. The exhibit marks the first step in a multi-year process that will see the nearly 2,000-piece Higgins collection fully integrated into WAM by 2020.

The collection includes pieces from all over the world and throughout history, including Greek and Roman Antiquities, in addition to objects from Medieval and Renaissance Europe, the Islamic world, and the Far East.

“Integrating the Higgins collection allows us to build on our creative programming and community engagement, and is an incredible opportunity to develop a new approach to presenting these beautiful works of art," WAM Director Matthias Waschek said in a statement.

Pieces included in “Knights!” will mostly be from Medieval and Renaissance Europe, WAM said. The exhibit will have five sections: Courtly Pursuits; The Dance of Love and War; Knights of the Round Table; Triumphal Arch; and Good + Evil, illustrating the historical context in which the works were made and used.
