Marlborough Hospital cuts 10 jobs, lowers hours for 31 others

Marlborough Hospital has eliminated or reduced the hours of 41 employees in response to a “significant decline in volume” and reimbursements over the first quarter of its fiscal year, the hospital said in a statement.

The hospital, part of UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC), said it has eliminated 10 positions and reduced hours for 31 workers, with the cuts completed Wednesday. Spokeswoman Ellen Carlucci said positions affected by the cuts included managers and staff from various departments. Carlucci said the reductions of hours were mostly done through the elimination of per diem employees and cutting weekly schedules by an eight-hour shift.

The hospital employed 660 as of last summer.

“This is an initiative directed toward becoming more affordable for patients while continuing to focus on quality care and enhancing the patient experience,” the hospital’s statement said. “The organization cannot continue to maintain financial sustainability without taking steps to right size the organization and reduce expenses.”

The Marlborough cuts are the second announced this week within UMMHC. On Tuesday, UMass Memorial Medical Center said it cut all or part of 99 positions in its second round of reductions since December, when 40 administrative employees lost their jobs. The positions impacted by the UMass Memorial cuts this week included vice presidents, managers and clinical staff, spokesman Robert Brogna said.

At the start of its fiscal year in October, UMMHC said the medical center carried the majority of the health system’s projected $55-million operating loss for its 2013 fiscal year. According to the state’s Center for Health Information and Analysis, Marlborough Hospital had an operating loss of nearly $1.1 million in fiscal year 2012 and a surplus of $41,000 for the third quarter of 2013, the most recent quarter for which information is available.

UMMHC employs about 13,000 people system-wide and also includes Clinton Hospital and HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster, as well as physician practices across the region. In December, UMMHC announced it plans to sell its Palmer-based Wing Memorial Hospital to Baystate Health of Springfield.
