Danforth Art closes on purchase of Framingham building
Danforth Art has signed the final closing documents for its move to Framingham’s historic Jonathan Maynard Building.
The art museum and school agreed in February 2013 to pay $1 million to the Town of Framingham and provide $500,000 in community services for the purchase of the three-story, 32,336-square-foot building on the Framingham Centre Common.
The two sides closed on the deal Thursday afternoon.
“This purchase provides Danforth Art with a viable long-term home for what is a vibrant and thriving arts education center,” Katherine French, executive director of Danforth Art, said in a statement.
Some $250,000 was to be paid to the town Thursday, said Town Manager Robert Halpin, while the remaining $750,000 will be paid over the course of a 25-year mortgage.
Danforth will gradually move its collection into the building, at 14 Vernon St., Halpin said, and the relocation will be complete by fall 2016, according to the museum’s website.
The museum is currently located in the 79,154-square-foot former Framingham South High School building at 123 Union Ave. Danforth’s new space is in far superior condition, Halpin said, and will put the museum in close proximity to other cultural exhibits.
“The conveyance of the Maynard Building to the Trustees … preserves a surplus, yet historic building, and places it in the hands of a much valued cultural institution,” Halpin said in a statement.
