EcoTarium launches transportation innovation incubator

Worcester’s EcoTarium will kick off a year-long innovation incubator with more than 100 participants this weekend.

The Art of Science Learning is a $2.65-million program, also in Chicago and San Diego, funded by the National Science Foundation that brings “fellows” together from education, science, business and the arts. A full day of workshops at the EcoTarium Saturday will launch the 47-week Worcester Incubator for Innovation that will focus on exploring how the arts can be combined with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) “to find viable market solutions for today’s challenges,” the EcoTarium said in a statement.

The fellows will work in teams of 10 and be guided by national artists, faculty and STEM professionals to learn and apply arts-based experiential learning, best corporate practices and scientific innovation practices, according to program’s website. The Worcester program will culminate in participants identifying “new transportation solutions to enhance Worcester's economic productivity, connect its neighborhoods and communities, and improve the quality of life for its residents and visitors.”

"This is a unique and tremendously exciting opportunity for Worcester," said EcoTarium President Joe Cox. "It's a chance for some of the best and most creative minds in the area to completely transform how we think about art and science and how the city thinks about transportation. We're delighted to be the host for such a ground-breaking endeavor."

The public will be invited to an Art of Science Learning Community Day at the EcoTarium, Saturday, May 10 to meet experts, give input on the project and participate in transportation-related activities.
