MathWorks supports MIT with $2M funding

Following up on a 2012 pledge supporting Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s OpenCourseWare, Natick-based MathWorks has pledged $2 million to support the development of massive online open courses – or MOOCs - through MITx, part of the school’s online education programs, according to MIT.

MIT said OpenCourseWare and MITx, flagship programs of the recently launched Office of Digital Learning, are aimed at exploring “how scalable learning technologies will transform education online and on campus.”

The new funding, in addition to $850,000 provided by MathWorks in 2012, will fund post-doctorate, graduate and undergraduate teaching assistant positions for MITx’s massively open online courses as well as the creation of other MITx courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. The funding will also support courses that provide hands-on activities.

“Scalable learning tools are permitting unprecedented access to educational opportunities,” MathWorks CEO Jack Little said at the announcement of the new gift. “We are proud to play a role in this remarkable effort to provide outstanding educational experiences to anyone with Internet access, and to create more effective and engaging learning for students on the MIT campus.”

According to MIT, MITx offers 24 courses that use MathWorks’ MATLAB software and boasts more than 1 million enrollments.
