CarMax buys Westborough land for $9.7M
CarMax Auto Superstores has purchased more than 40 acres of land on Route 9 in Westborough and plans to open a sales and service facility at the site.
The purchase price is $9.65 million, according to deed records.
The Viriginia-based new and used car retailer plans to build a 57,235-square-foot facility at the 170-178 Turnpike Road site next to Bertucci’s restaurant, according to documents filed with the commonwealth. Design work for the company’s second Massachusetts store is expected to start next year.
According to deed records, CarMax purchased the bulk of the land Friday for $6.4 million from World Realty Inc., affiliated with David “Duddie” Massad, chairman of Commerce Bank in Worcester and owner of the former Duddie Ford dealership in Westborough. Much of the land had been used for a golf driving range operated by the Westborough Rotary Club.
The company bought the remaining land Friday for $3.25 million from 180 Turnpike Road LLC, affiliated with Westborough-based McCarthy Industries.
CarMax’s used car facility is expected to employ more than 100 and will include a vehicle showroom, service area, car wash and detailing building, below-ground fuel storage and remote fuel dispenser accessible only to employees, according to planning documents. The location will also have 447 parking spaces for vehicles on sale and another 326 for customers and employees.
Sixteen of the 50.2 acres purchased will be developed, the company said it its filing. The project was approved by town selectmen Feb. 11.
Massad purchased his share of the property in 1990 for $4 million, according to Westborough property records. McCarthy Industries bought its share in 1993 and 2005 for $200.
