TechSandBox wins grant to boost startups

TechSandBox, the MetroWest innovation center for science- and technology-based startups, said it has received a $25,000 planning grant to develop a new accelerator program from the Westborough-based Massachusetts Technology Collaborative.

As part of its efforts to strengthen regional innovation and entrepreneurship across the state, The Innovation Institute at the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative is providing the six-month grant to TechSandBox to design what it deemed a “new effort aimed at boosting high-potential entrepreneurs and startups in MetroWest.”

“MetroWest is home to thousands of us who have made their mark starting and growing the scalable, tech sector businesses that really define innovation,” TechSandBox CEO Barbara Finer said in a statement. "In less than nine months, we have attracted over 1,000 participants, helping cohere a highly fragmented region and develop a community, and our co-working space is already home to several entrepreneurs."

TechSandBox said the grant provides half of the funding needed to research, define and communicate a formal accelerator program for MetroWest and similar communities.

Additional funding for the program will be provided by Alexander Aronson & Finning of Westborough, Waltham-based Morse Barnes-Brown & Pendleton, as well as Southfield Properties III, and KFR & Associates.
