National Grid building new Blackstone Valley line

Following approval from the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Sitting Board this month, National Grid announced Thursday that it would begin construction on a 15.4-mile electric transmission line in Millbury, Sutton, Northbridge, Uxbridge and Millville.

The utility, which serves most of Central Massachusetts, said that the project is part of a larger $512 million, 75-mile long 345-kV transmission line known as the Interstate Reliability Project (IRP). The line is being developed by ISO-New England, National Grid and Northeast Utilities and is collectively known as the New England East-West Solution or “NEEWS.”

“By strengthening the network in New England, NEEWS will improve operational flexibility, reduce congestion costs, and help integrate cleaner generation resources,” said Marcy Reed, president of National Grid in Massachusetts.

National Grid said it expects work on the project to begin in June at its Millbury station.
