EPA gives nearly $5M for Mass. brownfields efforts
Massachusetts is receiving$4.85 million out of nearly $17.5 million in New England brownfields grants announced by the federal government Wednesday as part of ongoing efforts to assess, clean up and redevelop contaminated properties.
The money includes a $400,000 assessment grant to the Fitchburg Redevelopment Authority.
The awards also include $400,000 to the City of Boston for a community-wide assessment grant; $200,000 to clean up the Facemate parcel in Chicopee and $200,000 to clean up the Uniroyal site in Chicopee; a $300,000 assessment grant to the Franklin Regional Council of Governments, a $200,000 cleanup grant for the Automania site in Holyoke; a $200,000 assessment grant to the City of Lowell; a $400,000 cleanup grant for two Cliftex Mill properties in New Bedford; a $400,000 assessment grant for Somerville; a $400,000 assessment grant for Springfield; and a $200,000 grant to clean up the former NuBrite Chemical site in Taunton.
The largest award, $950,000, was delivered in the form of a community-wide revolving loan fund grant to the City of Salem. The second largest award was $600,000 to clean up the Paul Dever School in Taunton. The EPA said it was also providing aid for assessment work at the Eagle Mill Complex in Lee valued at $115,000.
