Old W. Brookfield pub returning to its roots

One of the nation’s oldest operating taverns is undergoing a major renovation in West Brookfield, part of an effort to revitalize the town center.
Beginning today, the dining and function room of Ye Olde Tavern will be transformed first as part of the weeks-long project, moving back to its original décor from 1760, according to a statement from the tavern’s owners. This is the first step in a weeks-long project.
The business, owned by Cindy and Roger Larson since 2007, will remain open with the rear Pleasant Street Pub & Pizza quarters offering a full menu. A second, six- to eight-week phase will see the front dining and function room reopen while the rear pub is renovated, Cindy Larson said.
“We hold the 254-year history of Ye Olde Tavern close to (our) hearts,” she said. “When both phases are done, we anticipate sharing our pride with the entire region.”
Formerly the West Brookfield House, the building has been known as Ye Olde Tavern since 1906. A December 1928 fire heavily damaged the building and led to removal of an original fourth floor, meaning a dormered third-floor has served as the new peak.
The current project began with the need to add a code-compliant sprinkler system, but grew to include overdue systems modernization with energy-efficient windows, heating and air conditioning plus handicap access, the tavern owners said.
