Governor: Non-compete deal ‘trending’ in right direction

Gov. Deval Patrick said he was heartened by the Senate's inclusion of a measure in an economic development bill on Tuesday to restrict the use of non-compete clauses in employment contracts.

Patrick views such agreements as an impediment to innovation. The Senate adopted a compromise put forward by Sen. William Brownsberger just hours after Economic Development Secretary Greg Bialecki testified before a committee that the administration was willing to compromise on its call for a complete ban on non-compete agreements.

"I think this makes a great step forward," Patrick said Wednesday, stating that he had conversations with Senate President Therese Murray and House Speaker Robert DeLeo about the issue before Patrick and Murray travelled to San Diego last week for the 2014 International BIO conference. Patrick said Bialecki has been working closely with the members of the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies to reach a deal.

"I think, as they say around here, it's trending in a very positive direction," the governor said.
