EMC acquires TwinStrata of Natick

Hopkinton-based EMC Corp. announced Tuesday it has acquired cloud storage company TwinStrata of Natick for an undisclosed amount.

TwinStrata’s CloudArray, which offers storage and backup capabilities, will be integrated into EMC’s VMAX3 enterprise data service. This will enable customers to save money by moving infrequently accessed data to the public cloud, EMC said in a statement.

“Our customers will still get everything they know and love about TwinStrata … as part of a wider, market-leading cloud portfolio (with a) global brand behind it,” Nicos Vekiarides, TwinStrata’s co-founder and CEO, said in a letter to customers. “We could not be more excited for the opportunity.”

Vekiarides said the integration of CloudArray into VMAX3 will improve off-premise storage capacity expansion, data protection and disaster recovery.

Details regarding the acquisition will be announced at a later date, EMC said in a statement.

TwinStrata was incorporated in May 2008 and closed an $8-million fundraising round in October 2011. The company employs about 40 people.

EMC has been very active in the cloud, acquiring four cloud-oriented companies between 2004 and 2012 and launching its own cloud services platform in 2008. However, unlike hardware giants such as Hewlett-Packard and Oracle, EMC hasn’t built its own dedicated cloud service.
