Initial jobless claims dip slightly

Initial claims for unemployment filings fell last week, providing further evidence of a strengthening U.S. job market, the federal government said Thursday.

Initial, seasonally adjusted claims level fell to 304,000 for the week ending July 5 from 315,000 the previous week, according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor. This drop slightly beat many expectations, which had called for the rate to stay in the 310,000-to-315,000 range.

However, the data showed that for the week ending June 28, initial claims in Massachusetts increased 4,566, trailing only New Jersey in claims for the week.
