Worcester life sciences firm says product passes milestone
VitaThreads, a life sciences firm founded in 2012 by two Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) professors, said its signature product has passed a milestone after its testing in animals.
The company said its VitaSuture Wound Management Systems (VWMS) was successful in a study conducted on rats over 57 days. VWMS demonstrated “successful closure of evaluated wounds with no device-linked complications,” VitaThreads said in a statement. It added that the suture material was absorbed within 14 days, with minimal evidence of inflammation.
Glenn R. Gaudette, a professor of biomedical engineering at WPI who advises VitaThreads, said the “substantial lack of inflammation of VWMS presents a unique opportunity to reduce common suture complications, including scar … formation while its quick absorption offers a chance for rapid return to native tissue behavior.
“This is just the beginning as I see the future potential for VitaSuture as an efficient, localized stem cell delivery system," he said.
