Galaxy Development of Auburn said it’s looking to turn an abandoned industrial site along Fitchburg’s Water Street into a 21,650-square-foot shopping center.

Galaxy principal Michael C. O’Brien said the Water Street Plaza would be situated directly across from Market Basket and offer more than 100 parking spaces and 540 feet of road frontage. Galaxy said it’s pursuing a zoning change from industrial to retail, and hopes to break ground at the site next spring.

“We’re anxious and excited about development,” said O’Brien, noting it would be Galaxy’s first project in Fitchburg.

The site is the former location of Pelletier Building Supply, and backs directly onto the North Nashua River.

Galaxy will allow for subdivision of the retail plaza into units as small as 1,400 square feet.
