Regional planners launch Buy Local campaign

The Central Massachusetts and Montachusett regional planning commissions are spearheading a “Buy Local” initiative to boost the sale of the area’s agricultural and food products, the Central Massachusetts commission announced Monday.

This initiative seeks to encourage a shift in spending patterns to support local businesses and producers in Central Massachusetts in hopes to spur economic development, job creation, improved public health, farm sustainability and community building, it said.

With more than 1,500 farms and artisanal producers, Worcester County ranked sixth among counties nationwide in direct-to-market food sales in 2012, it said, adding that locally grown food is the country’s fastest growing food sector — rising 10 percent in 2013, double that of all food sales.

The Buy Local initiative will target markets, grocers, restaurants, wholesalers, distributors, and processors, as well as anchor institutions such as hospitals and schools, the organization said.
