Waltham-based Vantage Builders Inc. said it has begun construction of a Sikh temple on Flanders Road in Westborough, which will become the principal place of worship for the New England Sikh community.

The 21,000-square-foot temple, which will be known as Gurduara Sahib, will house classrooms, meeting places, a community kitchen and library, and living quarters of the community’s religious leader, according to Vantage. The project is expected to be completed by early 2015.

Sikhism is a monotheistic religion that originated in South Asia. The New England community, known as the New England Sikh Study Circle (NESSC), is based in Milford. The group, which was founded in 1968, purchased the 37-acre wooded site at 168 Flanders Rd. in 2012 with the intention of building a new temple.

The project includes foundation, steel, masonry, electrical, and HVAC and plumbing work, according to Vantage.

“We have enjoyed working closely with (the NESSC) leadership team as we help bring their vision to reality,” Vantage Senior Project Manager Mike Thayer said in a statement.
