Shaw's parent confirms payment info breach

The parent company of Shaw’s Supermarkets confirmed Friday that a security breach in its information networks exposed information on customers’ credit and debit card payments from some of its stores.

AB Acquisition LLC, which operates more than 1,000 supermarkets in 29 states, including 11 Shaw’s stores in Central Massachusetts, said data in some of its Shaw’s and Star Market stores in Massachusetts may have been exposed in a breach that occurred between June 22 and July 17, the company said.

The company said the appropriate federal law enforcement authorities have been notified, and it is working with its third-party information technology services provider, Supervalue, to get a better handle on the situation.

AB Acquisition said the ongoing investigation has not revealed that any cardholder data was stolen, and has no evidence of any misuse of data.

"We know our customers are concerned about the security of their payment card data, and we work hard to protect it," said Mark Bates, senior vice president and CIO, in a statement. "As soon as we were notified of the incident, we began working closely with Supervaluto determine what happened. It's important to note that there is no evidence at this point that consumer data has been misused."

AB Acquisition said it believes the intrusion has been contained.
