Fitchburg State launches search for president

With the retirement of Robert V. Antonucci looming, Fitchburg State University (FSU) has formally launched a nationwide search for his successor, the school announced.

A presidential search committee met for the first time on Aug. 25, according to a statement from FSU. The board of trustees has also hired executive search firm Witt/Keiffer to help. The goal is to name a new president by early 2015, as Antonucci is set to retire at the end of the 2014-2015 academic year.

“This will be an open and transparent process,” said Carol T. Vittorioso, chairman of the FSU Board of Trustees. “The entire campus community will be involved.”

Donald R. Irving, an FSU graduate and trustee, will chair the search committee. Irving is president and founder of Data Guide Cable Corp. in Gardner. Other search committee members include: Martin F. Connors, Jr., CEO of Rollstone Bank & Trust of Fitchburg; Nate McKinnon, assistant commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education; Nathan Gregoire, president of the FSU Student Government Association; and Andre Ravenelle, superintendent of the Fitchburg Public Schools.

Witt/Keiffer will also conduct the search for the university’s next vice president for academic affairs, which will begin later in the fall. The next president is expected to be involved in that search, according to FSU.

Antonucci has been with FSU since 2003, when he became its 10th president. He has overseen several major construction projects, such as a new science center that opened in 2013, and the reinvention of the school’s Hammond Hall as a gateway to the campus. He was also at the helm in2010 when FSU transitioned from the former name of “Fitchburg State College,” to become a “university,” along with six other state schools.
