DOR offers tax amnesty program this fall

Some 300,000 businesses and individuals will get a chance to pony up back taxes without a penalty this fall under a new two-month-long amnesty program, the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) announced Thursday.

The program, which will run from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31, covers a variety of individual and business taxes, billed on or before July including: individual income tax, withholding, sales and use, meals taxes, personal use tax, and cigarette and cigar/smoking taxes , the DOR said.

The DOR said that under the program, it will waive all assessed, unpaid penalties for taxpayers who respond by paying all overdue taxes and interest by Oct. 31.

The amnesty program was proposed by the Legislature and was included in the fiscal year 2015 budget signed by Gov. Deval Patrick in July.
