Looking back to 2013: Tim Murray comes home

EVENT: After his election as lieutenant governor in 2006 (and his re-election in 2010), former Worcester Mayor Timothy Murray stuns the state's political establishment by resigning to become president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce.

RECAP: After a controversial automobile crash, along with his political ties to disgraced former Chelsea Housing Authority Executive Director Michael McLaughlin, Murray took himself out of the 2014 race for governor. Months later, the chamber's directors persuaded him to return to Worcester to succeed the retiring Richard Kennedy.

FAST FORWARD: Murray quickly embarked on a $2 million fundraising campaign to support the chamber's strategy to boost the region's business base. His new role has also helped elevate the chamber's profile. As for the events that preceded his job switch? Murray paid a $10,000 fine and his campaign paid an additional $70,000 to the state. He accepted responsibility for failing to properly oversee and monitor fundraising, although he said he never asked McLaughlin to solicit funds.
