Initial unemployment claims rise

Initial claims for unemployment filings ticked up last week, the federal government said Thursday.

The initial, seasonally adjusted claims level was 315,000, for the week ending September 6, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week's revised level, according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor. This marks the highest weekly number of claims in more than two months.

But, the four-week average of applications, which is a more consistent view of the job market, rose just 750 to 304,000. The average is 7.1 percent below the average a year ago.

Locally, though, the Bay State was among the few states that saw a dip in the number of claims filed. For the week, there was a decrease of 345 filings in the state, according to the report.
