JetBlue CEO will retire in Feb.

Long-time JetBlue CEO to step down.

The man who helped bring JetBlue to Worcester will be stepping down in February, the company announced on Thursday.

Dave Barger, the company’s CEO who has led Jet Blue for more than 16 years, will retire on February 15, 2015 and will be replaced the following day by the company’s current president Robin Hayes, according to New York City-based JetBlue.

Although the announcement came just yesterday, reports of Barger considering retirement at the end of his contract have been circulating for the last several months.

“I have been looking for the right time to take the next step in my life for a while, and my decision was ultimately determined by the strong state of the company and my absolute confidence in Robin's leadership,” said Barger said in a statement. “I know that JetBlue's best days are ahead.”

Hayes was named president of JetBlue in 2013, following a stint as the company’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer from 208 through 2012, the airline said.

JetBlue is the lone passenger carrier flying out of the Worcester Regional Airport since beginning service to Florida in November 2013. The airline is on pace to service 100,000 passengers in its first year, according to Massport, which operates the airport
