Slots site looks to fill 500 jobs

Nine months away from its planned opening, Plainridge Park Casino operators are now accepting applications for 500 new jobs.

Penn National Gaming on Monday announced that it has opened a career center at 416 South St. in Plainville. Plainridge officials say 400 construction workers have been building their slots-only casino and an additional 600 construction workers are expected before the facility opens next June.

Penn National plans to hire 90 percent of their permanent employees from the area around Plainville.

State gaming and casino oversight officials have also awarded expanded gaming licenses to developers with plans to build facilities in Springfield and Everett; no license has yet been awarded for the southeastern Massachusetts area where Plainridge is located.

However, the fate of the law that authorized up to three casino licenses and one slots facility will be decided by voters on Nov. 4 when they rule on a proposed repeal that industry opponents have placed on the ballot.

Plainridge currently features betting on simulcast races and live harness racing. Suffolk Downs, the only thoroughbred track in the state, announced plans to close last week after its expanded gaming partner, Mohegan Sun, failed to win the eastern Massachusetts casino license.
