Porter and Chester Institute moving to Worcester

The Porter and Chester Institute trade school will move its 40 employees and 225 students from two Westborough sites into a new Worcester location beginning in October, according to the organization.

The company has leased a 50,000-square-foot center at 220 Brooks St. on the north side of the city, said Phil Krebs, vice president of operations. The institute will move administrative offices as well as training programs to the site Oct. 20. The company’s diploma programs include automotive repair, dental assisting and practical nursing. It has eight other locations in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

“We are consolidating both operations and increasing the size of the location as well,” Krebs said. “We wanted to be under one roof and under one contiguous space. Many of our students are coming out of Worcester already.”

The new location has easy access to Interstate 190 as well as public transportation, he said.

Grove Street Properties LLC purchased the property in May and put $2.5 million into renovations to outfit the space for classrooms, said Nick Chacharone, manager for Grove Street. The building had been occupied by a Verizon call center and a bay for servicing the company’s vehicles. Verizon continues to lease the service bay portion of the building, Chacharone said.
