Worcester home sales drop; prices continue to rise

Home sales in Worcester dropped by 22 percent in September over last year, while the median sale price of a single-family home climbed, RE/MAX of New England announced Monday.

Worcester’s decrease in home sales was below the state average, with the state as a whole seeing only a slight drop of 2.9 percent over September 2013. However, the median price of homes sold in the city rose 6.2 percent to $184,000, according the RE/MAX’s September Monthly Housing Report. The state saw median home prices increase 0.6 percent compared with September 2013.

Pending sales in Massachusetts were the highest within the six-state region with a 50.2 percent year-over-year jump, according to RE/MAX.

Month to month, the cooler weather helped contribute to a seasonally-expected decline in the New England market of 15.8 percent in home sales, with pending sales up 11.3 percent, according to the report. Across the region, homes are staying on the market an average of four additional days, according to REMAX, while median price is down 5.3 percent on average.
