New U.S. home sales flat in September

Sales of new single-family homes across the United States in September remained relatively flat compared to August, although they were up 17 percent from September of last year, the government said Friday.

According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, new single-family home sales for September were at a seasonally adjusted rate of 467,000, 1,000 more than the downwardly revised August rate. August had originally been placed at 504,000 units.

Sales were mixed across the nation compared to August, with only the Midwest seeing a dramatic jump of 12.3 percent and the West down by 9 percent. Home sales in the Northeast were flat compared to August, but for have grown by 20 percent year-over-year, the government said.

The national median sale price of new homes sold last month was $259,000, and the average sale price was $313,200, the government reported.
