Leshin inaugurated as WPI's first female leader

Laurie A. Leshin was inaugurated over the weekend as the 16th president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and the first woman to hold the position in the school’s 150-year history.

Leshin, a space scientist with more than 20 years of experience in academia and government, highlighted in her inaugural address how students can derive benefits by reaching out beyond the campus.

“We must expand WPI’s global presence to increase our impact in communities locally, nationally, and worldwide,” Leshin said during her address Saturday. “WPI is engaged in a quest with a critical focus: to prepare the next generation of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) leaders who are vital to the future competitiveness and prosperity of our nation. If we want to prepare our students to become these leaders, then we must give them the opportunity to work within the world, out in the world, as a part of the world.”

The ceremony was attended by more than 1,200 people, including Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty, Massachusetts Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Gregory P. Bialecki, Clark University President David Angel and U.S. Sen. Edward Markey.
