November 10, 2014 EMPLOYEE HEALTH AND WELL BEING: Digital Federal Credit Union, Marlborough

DCU: A wide range of benefits

While the benefits Digital Federal Credit Union provides — including birthdays off with pay, three weeks of vacation for starting employees and on-site fitness facilities — are a boon to the employees, having a happy and healthy staff is just as much a benefit to the company and its members, DCU officials say.

“We believe that if we treat our employees well, the business will come. We want our employees to be healthy and well-rounded,” Jane Fontaine, vice president of human resources and training, said. “It's not any heavy-duty philosophy, but it is common sense that if you treat your employees well, it will come back to you.”

DCU offers a number of benefits, starting with medical and dental plans for full- and part-time employees, and it pays nearly all of the health insurance premiums for individuals and families.

In addition, there are on-site fitness centers at both DCU headquarters and the operations center. For $3 a week, of which up to $150 can be reimbursed by an insurance provider, employees have access to aerobic equipment, strength training, free personal trainers, yoga, Zumba and nutritional counseling.

Employees who use these on-site facilities get the full gym experience for nearly nothing, according to the company's human resources manager, Cindy Romano. It benefits the employees, many of whom work in a sedentary setting, with a way to access a healthy lifestyle, while benefitting the company with healthier employees and, by extension, lower insurance rates.

The healthy lifestyle extends to the cafeteria, where meal options such as a fresh salad bar and “heart healthy” specials are offered daily.

“This company — and this starts from the top down — wants to do things for their employees,” Romano said.

The company also supports employees facing health challenges, she said, providing short- and long-term disability coverage. The short-term coverage allows employees, depending on length of service, to receive from 60 percent to all their salary for up to three months.

“The credit union was very concerned that employees would be able to survive if something happened to them,” Romano said, citing situations in which employees get sick or need to take time off to undergo surgery.
