Shrewsbury housing development gets go-ahead

A mixed-use Chapter 40B affordable housing proposal in Shrewsbury won the approval of selectmen Wednesday.

Selectmen felt the proposal for Walnut Street was more suitable for the town than two other Chapter 40B proposals under consideration, the Telegram & Gazette reported.

The proposal – from Robert and William Depietri, owners of Southborough-based Capital Group Properties -- calls for 150 units at 258 and 275 Walnut St.

The T&G reported that selectmen said the project will have a lesser impact on the schools, as it is mostly for residents age 55 and above. It also has a commercial component, and will provide the town with $450,000 in mitigation funds.

The two proposals not chosen were for 400 and 526 Hartford Tpke. (Route 20)

Capital Group Properties has agreed to work with the town under the state’s Local Initiative Program, designed to give the town more control than the usual Chapter 40B process.

Selectmen Wednesday said they will work with Capital Group Properties to address concerns related to traffic and sewerage, the T&G reported.
