Raytheon will design defense center for Qatar

The U.S. Air Force has awarded Tewksbury-based Raytheon a "foreign military sales contract" to design and implement an air and missile defense operation center for the State of Qatar.

The contract, which may not exceed $75.6 million, is part of an effort announced by the Middle Eastern nation in March and by the U.S. Department of Defense on Nov. 26.

In an announcement Monday morning, Raytheon, which has operations in Marlborough and Sudbury, said the operation center will provide Qatar with integration of U.S. air defense systems and European systems and radars. Those systems will include the Patriot missile defense system and, early warning radar and defense technology that operates at high altitudes.

Raytheon registered sales of $24 billion in 2014 and has 63,000 employees worldwide.
