Report: State’s export growth slow

Export growth in Massachusetts since the recession has been "fairly anemic," according to a new report, which found the Bay State ranked second to last among the 50 states in export growth between 2009 and 2014.

The MassBenchmarks report, assembled by researchers at the UMass Donahue Institute in Hadley, contrasts growth levels here with a strong rebound in U.S. exports in recent years and a surge in exports in Massachusetts during the 2000s.

According to the report, U.S. exports, fueled by vehicle and petroleum sales, increased nearly 50 percent since bottoming out in 2009 while Massachusetts exports grew by less than 14 percent since 2009.

Massachusetts exports in 2013 remained below the record $28.3 billion recorded in 2008. If exports had kept pace with growth nationally since the recession, exports would have totaled $35.3 billion in 2013.

Bay State exports did exceed the U.S. growth rate in 2013 and the year to date through September.
