National Grid to build more solar in Mass.

National Grid's Ed White

National Grid will more than triple its solar-power generation capabilities in Massachusetts with an additional 16 megawatts of energy at 19 sites to be built in the next year, the utility announced Monday.

The new sites will mark the second phase of the company’s solar program, under which it already operates more than five megawatts of solar generation at five sites throughout Massachusetts, according to National Grid. The facilities will be installed near areas of high electricity demand, the company stated in a release. National Grid will work with solar installers Borrego Solar, SolarCity and PowerSecure to build photovoltaic arrays in Abington, Attleboro, Ayer, Brockton, Charlton, Dighton, Fall River, Grafton, Leicester, Millbury, Shirley and Sturbridge.

“Solar generation is an increasingly important piece of the energy picture for Massachusetts and the entire country,” said Edward White, a vice president for National Grid. “As our network and our customers' expectations evolve, we anticipate more opportunities for our company to strategically invest in new energy sources and technologies on behalf of our customers.”

The state’s Green Communities Act, passed in 2008, allows electric utilities to construct, own and operate up to 50 megawatts of solar generation.
