Clark geographer receives NASA grant

A NASA grant to study the effects of melting Arctic Ocean ice has been awarded to a research group that includes a Clark University professor who will oversee $614,000 in funding for the project.

The three-year grant will cover the training of two doctoral students and several undergraduates at Clark as they create computer models based on first-hand data to investigate the impact of reduced sea ice coverage on the aquatic life in seas north of Alaska. Karen Frey, an associate professor of geography at Clark, is part of the group.

“There has been a pronounced decrease in the summer sea ice extent, an overall thinning of the ice, and a lengthening of the summer melt season, all of which have profound consequences for the cycling of carbon as well as the dynamics of the entire food web throughout the region,” Frey said in a statement.

The team will integrate its research with ongoing field research efforts.
