Doctors Express, physicians group reach deal on urgent care

Doctors Express, an urgent-care franchise with locations in Central Massachusetts, will offer health care to patients of physicians who belong to the Central Massachusetts Independent Physicians Association (CMIPA) under a new partnership that both organizations said will improve access to urgent care.

Jim Brennan, CEO of Medvest LLC, the master developer of Doctors Express in the New England region, said the deal is similar to one Medvest recently inked with Boston-based Steward Health Care. Both partnerships allow patients to receive insured care at any Massachusetts Doctors Express location.

“Our partnership with CMIPA continues the objective at Medvest to redefine how patient care is delivered,” Brennan said in a statement.

With 200 physicians, CMIPA provides care for 45,000 patients, primarily in Worcester County, according to the organization’s website.

Worcester locations planned

Brennan said that as the Doctors Express franchise continues to grow in New England, such partnerships with major medical systems are “the way of the future.” Doctors Express has locations in Natick and Marlborough, with the Marlborough site having opened in December on Boston Post Road and the Natick location in 2012. But there are plans to open a Worcester location at 115 Stafford St. in the late spring, followed by a second location at a site to be determined. Doctors Express has 10 other locations in Greater Boston and on the North Shore, as well as in West Springfield.

Partnering with Doctors Express allows the CMIPA to fulfill its goal of increasing access to urgent care for its patients, while reducing reliance on the emergency room, according to Gail Sillman, CEO of CMIPA. The organization had hired a consultant to vet possible partnerships with urgent care providers, and CMIPA even considered opening its own urgent care center before selecting Doctors Express, Sillman said.

“Doctors Express will honor our patient relationships and extend patient care on nights and weekends for a true, mutually beneficial partnership

Furthermore, Doctors Express has the name brand and market recognition that we were looking for – largely due to the quality of their patient care,” Sillman said in a statement.
