St. Mark’s assessed environmental penalty
St. Mark’s School in Southborough has been assessed a $5,500 penalty by the state Department of Environmental Protection as a result of groundwater discharge violations.
In a statement yesterday, the DEP said the penalty is the result of inspections it conducted last May at the school’s wastewater treatment facility, located on the school campus on Marlborough Road in Southborough.
The inspections identified maintenance problems that resulted in partially treated effluent bypassing the system’s sand filter units and being discharged onto the ground, the DEP statement said.
The consent order says the school must correct the equipment problems and provide documentation to the state when the corrective actions have been completed.
“Proper operation and maintenance of this wastewater facility is essential to protect the surrounding groundwater quality and the public health” Lee Dillard Adams, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester, said in the statement. “Routine maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities saves money in the long term.”
