WRTA gets $1 million to go greener
The Worcester Regional Transit Authority has secured a $1 million federal grant to boost the reliability of its electric buses while reducing its carbon footprint, U.S. Rep. James McGovern’s office announced Thursday.
The funding will provide the WRTA’s fleet of a six electric buses with an additional fast charger equipped with emergency power generation. That will help prevent service interruptions during power outages or maintenance failures.
The grant is being awarded through the “LoNo” – Low or No Emission Vehicle Deployment – program of the Federal Transit Administration, part of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation. “The LoNo program builds on the success of FTA’s National Fuel Cell Bus Program, which invested in the research, development and testing of alternative fuels and related equipment, such as electric charging stations, for the transit industry,” McGovern’s office said in a statement.
WRTA Administrator Stephen O’Neil said in the statement: “The WRTA is very happy to receive this $1 million award. … Not only are we reducing our carbon footprint, but we are saving money by not purchasing as much fossil fuel. This savings will be put back into more improvements to the service for our customers.”
