Home sales see snow slump

Record-breaking snowfalls throughout February stunted home sales in the region last month, with a drop of 13.5 percent from January’s numbers throughout New England, according to ReMax of New England.

The slump hit Massachusetts with a decrease of 9.8 percent in pending home sales in February compared to February 2014. Locally, home sales in Worcester declined 14.1 percent, with 55 units sold according to ReMax. But the median sale price for those homes was up 18.8 percent to $190,000.

“The continued, sustained snowfall has been an incredible challenge for the region’s housing market,” said Dan Breault of Re/Max of New England, in a statement. “With parking bans, power losses and dangerous road conditions, many consumers have sidelined their home search, content to wait for warmer weather.”

For 2014, home sales statewide declined 2.3 percent, from 2,949 units to 2,880, although the median price increased 7.4 percent to $306,000.
