Gabrieli, Harrity tapped for board
Education reformer and former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Gabrieli has been tapped by Gov. Charlie Baker to chair the Board of Higher Education replacing Charles Desmond. Baker on Tuesday afternoon also announced that Sheila Harrity, superintendent of Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School District and former principal at Worcester Technical High School, would take a seat on the board replacing Keith Peden.
"These new Board members not only have practical experience as leaders in education, but also have a strong commitment to excellence in higher education in both academic and vocational fields," Baker said in a statement.
Gabrieli, the runner up in the 2006 Democratic primary for governor to former Gov. Deval Patrick, is a partner emeritus at Bessemer Venture Partners focusing on health care software and biotechnology. He has also helped found three nonprofit education reform initiatives and has been a vocal proponent of extended learning time for students.
In 2002, Gabrieli ran as Shannon O'Brien's running mate for lieutenant governor on a ticket that lost to former Republican Gov. Mitt Romney and former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey. During last year's campaign, Gabrieli and his wife each gave maximum $500 donations to Baker's Democratic opponent Martha Coakley and matching $5,000 donations to the Democratic Party.
The terms of Desmond and Peden on the Board of Higher Education expired at the beginning of the year.
