Healey OK with courtroom cameras in some cases

Bucking federal court rules prohibiting recordings, Attorney General Maura Healey on Monday said she thought it would "appropriate" for video and audio recordings of the Tsarnaev Boston Marathon bombing trial to be allowed.

"I agree that cameras should be allowed in some cases, not all cases," Healey said during an appearance on Boston Herald radio, before turning her attention to transparency of the U.S. Supreme Court.

"I find it troubling that our Supreme Court is so reluctant to allow cameras or even allow real-time recording to be done," Healey said. "Today, cases are going before the Supreme Court. This is the country's highest court in the land where the most important cases and decisions are made and there's no way to publicly view that. And in fact you can't even listen to the recordings until hours after arguments, so I would like to see that be changed."

Pressed on whether the state should pursue separate charges against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev for his alleged role in the 2013 marathon bombing, Healey said it would depend on what happens in federal court.

"I think that's probably better left for another time," she said. The state's top prosecutor said decisions would likely be made by the district attorneys whether to pursue state-based charges, but she said she was sensitive to the impact additional court proceedings would have on the victims and families of those killed in the bombings.
