Baker shakes up business development office

Five of the six regional directors with the Massachusetts Office of Business Development were fired Friday by the Baker administration, which says it's looking to move in a "different direction" while maintaining the office.

Secretary of House and Economic Development Jay Ash confirmed that all regional directors, with the exception of Northeast Director Peter Milano, were dismissed, and said some offers have already been made to hire their replacements.

"We are not looking at a consolidation at this time," Ash said. "We had a different direction that we wanted to take with our regional directors. The regional directors we see as an important point of entry for businesses throughout the commonwealth as well as municipal officials in their communities."

The Massachusetts Office of Business Development serves as the point of contact for businesses looking to locate or expand in the state, offering help accessing resources, expertise, and incentive programs to grow jobs.

The office is overseen by Gov. Charlie Baker's Assistant Secretary of Business Development Nam Pham.

Rosemary Scrivens had served as director of the Central region.

"We are structuring our regional directors in a different way, looking for a different skill set and believe that we are going to be able to continue to do the work that the Mass. Office of Business Development has done, but also advance it along small business development and along specific sectors of the Commonwealth," Ash said.
