Study finds strong use of online health tools
A study commissioned by eClinicalWorks of Westborough finds strong use and acceptance of technology by patients to communicate with their doctors about medical issues.
According to the results of an online survey, commissioned by eClinicalWorks and conducted online by Harris Poll of more than 2,000 U.S. adults last month, 84 percent of people say their doctor's offices have patient portals.
Perhaps more intriguing is a broader use among adults age 55 and up. The study found that 61 percent of that group are more likely to access their health information through online portals than adults age 18 to 54. The study found only 45 percent of that demographic group more likely to use portals.
Additional findings from the survey include:
- More than one-third (37 percent) of people who use a wearable device or fitness tracker wear it every day;
- 78 percent of those who use such a device more than once a month feel it useful for their doctors to have access to that information;
- Nearly two-thirds of adults (64 percent) would at least sometimes choose telehealth visits to replace in-person visits for things such as follow-up visits for a previous concern, such as eye infections and skin checks; and
- Three in five, or 60 percent, are likely to schedule appointments with their doctors via a patient portal or other secure website, if available.
