ISO: N.E. power grid ready for summer

New England’s power grid is ready to meet peak summer electricity demand, according to ISO New England, the operator of the region’s bulk power system and wholesale electricity markets.

Through power production sources, such as nuclear, oil, coal, natural gas, hydro, biomass and wind, the New England system has nearly 29,575 megawatts of generating resources that will be available this summer. Under normal weather conditions of about 90 degrees, demand is expected to peak at 26,710 MW, according to ISO. Extreme summer weather, such as an extended heat wave of approximately 94 degrees, could push demand up to 29,060 MW, ISO said. If all generating resources in New England were operating at full output, the total amount of power produced would be approximately 30,325 MW, according to the grid operator.

Despite having enough capacity, the system will be operating within tighter margins than years prior, ISO reported.

If more power is needed, especially now that the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant is offline, “then the region will need to rely more heavily on power imports from neighboring areas,” said Vamsi Chadalavada, executive vice president and chief operating officer for ISO.
