Mayor forms panel on Worcester tax policy

Mayor Joseph M. Petty has created a 17-member tax policy committee to develop long-term recommendations for Worcester.

The group will convene in June and is expected to release a report next spring, according to a statement Wednesday from Petty’s office. The committee will meet with leaders and groups from around the city as it plans to “create an economic environment that keeps Worcester’s tax rate competitive with other similar cities,” the statement said.

“The goal of this committee is to work with Worcester’s business, residential and nonprofit communities to find a fair and equitable, long-term revenue policy to make our city more competitive for all,” Petty said in the statement.

Becker College President Robert Johnson will co-chair the committee with the mayor. “This committee will allow for a thoughtful discussion of policy that builds on the strength of our neighborhoods and businesses, and helps to guide our community leaders toward strategies that benefit the entire city,” Johnson, vice chairman of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors, said in the statement.

In addition to Petty and Johnson, panel members will include: Timothy McGourthy, executive director of the Worcester Regional Research Bureau; Chris Philbin, vice president of government and community relations for UMass Memorial Healthcare; District 1 City Councilor Tony Economou; Joan Crowell of the AWARE Coalition, a taxpayer advocacy group; Seth Eassel, managing partner of GIMP Management and Tax Consultancy; City Assessor William Ford; Fran Anthes, executive director of Family Health Center; Timothy P. Murray, president of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce; John Creedon, vice president of Creedon and Co. and owner of the Worcester Bravehearts baseball team; Paul Giorgio of the Shrewsbury Street Merchants Association; Libis Bueno of Domitek Inc.; Stephen Madaus, partner with Mirick O'Connell; Gary Vecchio, president of the Shrewsbury Street Neighborhood Association; Arthur Ellis, a resident; and state Rep. Daniel M. Donahue.
