Nichols College launches accounting master’s degree

Nichols College announced Wednesday that it would launch a Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) degree beginning in June.

The MSA is aimed at Nichols accounting majors who will be able to earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees over the four-year span normally needed for an undergraduate degree, college officials said in a release. The program will make use of summer courses and begin this fall with a pilot program for incoming freshmen.

The new program will focus on the courses and CPA exam preparation needed to work as a certified public accountant.

“In the past, accounting majors often joined firms right after college and postponed taking the CPA exam and the 30 additional credit hours required for a license. That pathway is becoming less available,” Kerry Calnan, executive director of Nichols’ Division of Graduate and Professional Studies, said in a statement.

Now, big firms will not hire anyone who has not completed the exam and the extra credits, she said.

Following the initial pilot, the program will be available to new accounting students with a high school GPA above 3.0. The MSA will also be available to those who have already graduated from Nichols or other colleges.

The new master’s degree – the third graduate degree Nichols offers, along with an MBA and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership – comes at a time when the demand for accountants and financial auditors is growing, according to Nichols. The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that between 2012 and 2022, these fields will increase by 167,000 jobs.
