Claremont, South High chosen for BioTeach program
Two Worcester public high schools are among ten across the state selected for inclusion in a biotechnology education program during the coming school year.
The Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation (MassBioEd Foundation) will expand its BioTeach program to Claremont Academy and South High Community School next year.
Schools in Avon, Gloucester, Lee, Northampton, Palmer, South Yarmouth, Springfield and Weymouth were also selected. A $139,999 grant from the Massachusetts Life Science Center (MLSC) will pay for the program, the nonprofit MasBioEd Foundation said in a statement Friday.
“By providing Massachusetts students with lab experiences in high schools across the state, we hope to inspire students to pursue educational opportunities and careers in the life sciences and biotechnology industry,” Lance Hartford, executive director of the Cambridge-based MassBioEd Foundation, said in the statement.
Through BioTeach, the MassBioEd Foundation will provide the schools with professional development and mentoring for teachers; updated, inquiry-based biotechnology curricula; access to student career exploration experiences; and up to $12,000 each for materials and equipment for school labs, the statement said.
With the addition of these schools, the BioTeach program now reaches 204 schools in Massachusetts, the statement said.
"Investing in training the next generation of life sciences workers is a critical part of the Center’s mission,” said Susan Windham-Bannister, MLSC’s president and CEO. “We want to create an interest in STEM careers among students all across the state, and at all levels.”
