CareWell announces first 2 Worcester sites

CareWell Urgent Care will open two urgent-care centers in Worcester later this year, the Quincy-based firm said Tuesday.

CareWell has signed a lease for one of the two sites, at 500 Lincoln St., real estate broker Glickman Kovago & Company confirmed Tuesday.

Dave Low, director of marketing at Quincy-based CareWell, said the target date for opening the Lincoln Street site is mid-summer.

He also said CareWell will open a second location at around the same time, at 244 Greenwood St. in Worcester.

It will occupy 2,450 square feet at Lincoln Street, alongside tenants Kohl’s, ALDI and AT&T, Glickman Kovago said. The property, which once housed the Holiday Inn and Conference Center, is now fully leased.

Last month, the Worcester Business Journal reported that CareWell and UMass Memorial Health Care are planning a partnership focused on the growing business of urgent care. Details have not yet been released.

Quincy-based CareWell Urgent Care is the state’s largest operator of urgent care centers.

CareWell joins a growing urgent-care presence in the Worcester-area market. Reliant Medical Group launched its retail ReadyMED clinics five years ago, beginning with its Shrewsbury location on Route 9. It has added sites in Milford and Auburn, and this year is planning to open locations in Hudson and Worcester.

Also opening this year are Doctor’s Express locations at 115 Stafford St. and at least one other location in Worcester, Doctor’s Express said in January. And Tenet Health Care, the parent of Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester and MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick, said last month it’s planning to open a site in Franklin in September under its MedPost Urgent Care brand, and was considering opening a Marlborough site.

Shaun Ginter, CEO of CareWell, told the WBJ last month that CareWell would open two Worcester-area locations in August, with room to grow from there. While Ginter did not disclose how they'll operate in conjunction with UMass Memorial, he said working with existing providers is key to the CareWell model.
