Spectrum brings 'peer recovery' model to Lawrence

Worcester-based Spectrum Health Systems announced the opening of a peer recovery center in downtown Lawrence to serve people trying to overcome addictions, the third such center the addiction treatment services provider operates in the Bay State.

The Lawrence Peer Recovery Center, also known as New Beginnings, uses the same peer-support model employed at centers in Worcester and Marlborough, the company said. It’s expected to serve 100 residents of Lawrence, Haverhill, North Andover and other nearby communities, offering peer-driven support groups, recreational activities, social events and volunteer opportunities to those who have completed more intensive addiction treatment programs.

“Many individuals who finish an inpatient or outpatient program help sustain their recovery through the strong network of support offered through our peer recovery programs,” said Kurt Isaacson, chief operating officer at Spectrum.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health awarded Spectrum a contract to open and operate the 3,000-square-foot center, which is based on the department’s own peer recovery model, said Spectrum spokesman Brendan Melican. The centers are grant-funded and services are available at no fee to members, Melican said. There are seven centers across the state, including those operated by Spectrum.

Lawrence was chosen as the site of a new center because of the high demand for ongoing support in that region; Melican said Spectrum operates a busy outpatient methadone clinic in neighboring Haverhill for people with opioid addiction.
