Philips to move operations from N.Y. to Cambridge

The international lighting company Royal Philips, which has operations in Framingham, has signed a $25 million research agreement with MIT and will move its North American research center from New York to Cambridge’s Kendall Square.

The research will cover both health care diagnosis and treatment along with digitally connected lighting systems, according to a statement from Philips. Industrial alliances such as this one help speed the rate at which technology goes from the laboratory into production, MIT Associate Provost Karen Gleason added.

The move allows Philips to tap into the innovative talent in Boston, said Henk van Houten, global head of Philips Research, in the statement.

“By moving to Cambridge and collaborating with MIT, its staff and its partners, Philips can work with some of the best minds in the world on health care delivery, looking at ways to better prevent, manage or treat common diseases,” he said.

According to reports, the move will bring between 100 and 200 workers into Boston, possibly pulling not only from New York but also current Massachusetts locations that include Framingham, Burlington and Andover. Philips Lifeline, part of Philips’ line of home health care products, employs 855 people in Massachusetts.

Philips is headquartered in The Netherlands and has approximately 108,000 employees.
